Branko only officially became a citizen of Socialist Yugoslavia in the 1970s. I believe that, for much of that time, he worked odd jobs as he wasn't able to build a career due to his status.
As for the car:
There's a family story that, after Branko had passed, his wife was watching television shortly after Tito's death. An interview was on with a high ranking army officer in which the officer was recounting the time Tito came to visit his barracks, saw an old Studebaker lying around and instructed the officer to acquire a new car to replace 'that piece of shit'.
At that point, Branko's wife shouted at the TV: "that piece of shit is OUR PIECE OF SHIT!"
Very interesting story about Marija's relatives. I wonder what happened next.
